'The Arrival'

The Arrival is a short film monologue of a pregnant woman who contemplates the decision to go into motherhood or remain as she is.

Narrative -

The film is a monologue, of a woman who is awaiting somebody whom she presumably had a one night stand with. She discusses in her head over the thought of having a child and the potential outcomes that may play out that day. As the film progresses, her opinion and perspective shifts from seemingly reluctant and hopeful to not have a child to warming up to the idea and getting excited.

Micro Elements -

The whole film is one shot, one take which is impressive and nicely done. The scene dynamically shifts along to her monologue. From the start it the lighting is very dark, the whole scene is almost black with the only light shining through the window highlighting our focus (the protagonist). Most memorable part is after her spilt coffee is cleaned up by the staff the scene gets even darker as she goes even deeper in thought and the lighting is manipulated to give off the effect of her in a moving train.

Overall Thoughts -

I enjoyed this, it's one of the better short films we've seen although it doesn't particularly stand out unlike Over and Slap. One major element I like from this film is how its one scene / one take. This gives more focus on the environment and in a way can help to make a scene feel more alive.

Comments

  1. Good. Although it is 'one take' is does use some camera movement which allows us to feel some intimacy with this character.
