About Narrative Structures

3 Act Structure

Films that follow a common standard of "Set-Up > Confrontation > Resolution"
This is simple and easy to understand for the audience, although it won't be nearly as in-depth as a feature length and in some ways this can be a benefit but in other ways it can bring things down.

Propp

Based on folk tales, he saw a link in how there is often use of 8 characters and 31 functions. These 8 characters were: 1 - Villain / 2 - Hero / 3 - Donor / 4 - Helper / 5 - Princess / 6 - Her Father / 7 - Dispatcher / 8 - False Hero

Todorov

Stories that begin in equilibrium that is disrupted by a problem. The events that follow seek to create a new equilibrium in place of what was destroyed.

Bathes

Narrative works through different codes which the audience tries to solve. Such examples are like, mystery whodunit films.

Levi-Strauss

Narratives are structured around binary opposites which is effectively what creates conflict. An example is the use of Cowboys and Indians.
