'Operator' is a short film directed by Caroline Bartleet from 2015. It portrays the struggle and intensity of one's job in the emergency service call centre.
Narrative -
The film focuses primarily on a woman aiding a caller whose house is on fire and is fearing for herself and her child. Most of the film focuses on this but the beginning and end really signify the conflict and how it becomes irrelevant before the call is picked up and after the call is over.
Micro Elements -
The use of sound throughout is well done and affected just enough to allow the audience to understand what the woman on the call is saying but just distorted enough to make the sound of the environment just vague enough to make the audience have different ideas of what is happening. For a film set in one spot, the camera shots aren't particularly spectacular but they manage to squeeze in some interesting shots such as 00:53
Overall Thoughts -
I liked the idea of having a conflict that is hidden from the audience, if anything it brings more suspense as we aren't exactly sure of what the situation is like. I could use something similar, say a phone call between someone going about their day and somebody they're connected with, or a stranger, although I'm certain this has been done before because I remember some films with this kind of concept. I would, however, find it difficult.
